Rock, Paper, Scissors…..Shoot!
June 15th, 2007 at 10:51 am by mikeI was playing a game of tag last week with the kindergarteners. We were outside, running around the big climbing structure in the playground, so I couldn’t see all the kids all the time. One of the kids claimed he tagged another one, while the other kid said he had reached base safely. I hadn’t seen what happened, so I couldn’t say who was right. It was turning into a heated debate, with both kids adamant they were right, and starting to get upset with the other. So I suggested they rock, paper, scissors for it, and the winner would win the descision.
It worked perfectly. They both were satisfied with the outcome and happily went back to playing, with no argument. And then I realized that rock, paper, scissors has this magical power for kids (and maybe adults, too). They can be upset, not listening to reason, not wanting to listen to a teacher’s descision, but they will always abide by the outcome of this game. If you can cal it a game. Because for kids, I think it transcends the whimsical and takes on something more. It is somehow almost this keeper of cosmic justice. It’s as if, once the hands have been thrown, the rock, paper, scissors gods have spoken, and their judgement is final and unquestionable. Not even the teacher can change the outcome. And the kids all understand and respect this power. It’s very cool. And if you disagree, I’ll rock, paper, scissors you for it…

I have been tempted to implement this at my job. Have not had the opportunity yet but plan to as soon as it arises. Really, it think this could solve many of our world issues.
