May 24th, 2007 at 3:28 pm by sarahI don’t know how it is that I’m so lucky, but I’ve got yet another “interesting” coworker to share. Here’s a bit of my day, for your enjoyment:Â
She’s standing at her desk on her cell phone when I hear her voice get terse, repeatedly pleading that the person she’s speaking with call the police. My interest piqued, I begin listening and it’s clear that she’s not convincing the other person, despite her pointing out the possibility of getting some “stuff” back. Their conversation ends and I don’t ask. She leaves to take her lunch break and I shrug my shoulders and go back to my book.
Half an hour later she’s back, and she’s upset. She interrupts my reading to tell me that she’s been talking with her elderly father, who runs a little bait shop in her town. He’s been robbed again, and is refusing to call the police to report it. Apparently this has happened several times before, there’s a bit of a crime problem in the neighborhood. Some of her neighbors have been robbed, and an attempt was made at her friends house. He’s not going to report this latest theft though, despite her pointing out that this is just going to keep happening.
 I suggest maybe she could make a call to the police for her dad, they might want to know even if he’s not going to pursue any legal action. No, she’s not going to, because it’s no use. The police wouldn’t do anything anyways, they never do. When her friend called to report the attempted break in they didn’t do much, and nothing at all came of it. I’m looking at her incredulously now, thinking that if it were my neighborhood, I’d want the police notified of any suspicious activity regardless of what action they’d take – at least there’d be a record of it.
She launches into a bit of tirade in her typical “I know how it is” voice. There’s no point in her calling them because the police in her town are terrible. Even she knows who’s responsible for the crimes (she admits with a bit of a secretive smirk) but they’re never going to catch him. I point out that maybe if she told the police who she thought was responsible, they could maybe look into that. Oh no, no. The police won’t even entertain the suggestion of a possible suspect without having someone who would be willing to stand up and testify in a court of law that they witnessed the person in the act.
I honestly don’t know, but highly question this, as I highly question everything that she states as fact in that “because I know how it is” voice. Sure, an eye-witness would be better, but I’m pretty sure that the police wouldn’t turn away someone if they had any information that might lead to an arrest?
As she continues her now impassioned speech about the pathetic job the police do, I wonder if she realizes what she’s saying. She’s unwilling to call the police because of the uselessness she pervcieves, but is pushing her father to call – it just doesn’t make any sense. She ends by pointing out that they’ll never have that eye-witness they need, because who would come forward and testify? People just don’t want to get involved these days.
I’m pounding my head on my desk on the inside, but externally I pick up my book again and turn away from her. She’s makes a few additional comments, but I don’t hear them. She’s still talking, but I’m not listening anymore.
