Yet another

March 29th, 2007 at 10:53 pm by mike

story by kids I work with. This time it’s by some 2nd and 3rd graders. And as with last time, I have only done some smoothing of edges.

There once lived a man named Bob who lived in Ye Olde Town of Medfield. He was a hobo, and would wander the town looking for work. Sometimes he found small jobs to do, but he never had enough work to have a place to stay. One day, as he was walking around, he noticed something odd. There was a mouse on the corner, and it was singing! Bob stopped, amazed.
“That’s incredible!” he said to the mouse. “How is it that you can sing?”
“Oh, I’ve always been able to sing, as long as I can remember,” the mouse replied. “Do you like it?”
“Oh, yes, very much. My name’s Bob, what’s your name?”
“My name is Chrysanthemum, and it’s nice to meet you Bob,” said the mouse.
Bob and Chrysanthemum became best friends, and soon, she was discovered by a movie producer who wanted to put her in films. She became a big success, and the two of them lived off the money she made from her movies. This lasted for a few years until she was replaced by a chipmunk that could play the drums. Once Chrysanthemum’s movie career ended, she and Bob were afraid that they would lose their home. They didn’t want to go back to being hobos, so they needed to find a way of getting money.
Bob and Chrysanthemum loved to read, and they went to the library almost every day. The librarian was a little bit scary, but they loved reading so much, they didn’t really mind. Their favorite stories were monster stories. And their favorite monster story was about a creature called the Ooblik. The Ooblik was a sloppy, piggy, looking creature that had three eyes, antennas (one of which was bent), and shot slimy things out of its nose. The Ooblik also guarded a great treasure that it had collected over hundreds of years by stealing from unsuspecting people.
One day, Bob and Chrysanthemum found a strange book that looked out of place. It was in the wrong section, and didn’t look like any of the other books in the library. In fact, it didn’t look like the librarian had put it there at all. The book was written long ago by a nun who said she could see into the future. It was about a creature called the Ooblik that disguised itself as a librarian and was living in a town called Medfield. Bob and Chrysanthemum couldn’t believe it. It was about their town, and it was about this librarian! They took the book, and went to find the nun.
The nun was living under the town hall, and was expecting Bob and Chrysanthemum (she could see the future, after all). When they got there, she told them about the Ooblik’s treasure, and gave them a plan to get it.
That night, Bob tied a piece of gold to Chrysanthemum’s tail, and she snuck into the library where the Ooblik was sleeping. As she ran around, the clinking of the gold against the floor woke the creature. The Ooblik, despite having three eyes, couldn’t see very well. It could only see the glint of light on the gold, not Chrysanthemum or her tail. Also, the Ooblik was not very smart, and didn’t know that gold couldn’t move around. So it started chasing the piece of gold around the room, and then out the door. It chased the gold down the street, and finally into the woods. It ran deeper and deeper into the woods, then realized that it couldn’t see the gold anymore. Not only that, but the Ooblik also didn’t know where it was. It was completely lost, and spent the rest of its life lost in the woods.
Meanwhile, Bob snuck into the library after the Ooblik had left. Thanks to the nun he knew where to look for the treasure, and the Ooblik had left it unlocked. So Bob took the treasure back home and waited for Chrysanthemum. When she returned, after having lost the creature in the woods, they celebrated their victory. They took the money and expanded the library, and Bob became the librarian. It became one of the most popular places in town, and nobody ever saw the Ooblik again.

This story is my favorite of the two. A singing mouse named Chrysanthemum partnered with a hobo named Bob against an Ooblik/librarian. Seriously brilliant.

I really hope you’re planning on working more stories into the upcoming projects. Also, as usual I hate you for being paid to do things like this.
