Temp-ting

March 29th, 2007 at 12:37 pm by sarah

Things you should not give a temp:

  • Your credit card number, expiration and security code
  • A month worth of unendorsed checks and cash
  • Permission to take these off the premises and to the bank for deposit
  • A key to the office
  • Unlimited internet, and very little to do
  • Authorization to order any and all supplies
  • Access to non-inventoried and sometimes expensive office supplies
  • Access to several members credit card information
  • Your ssn and mother’s maiden name
  • A postage meter

As I drove to the bank this morning with $18K+ in checks and cash in my car, it occured to me that there was something entirely wrong with this situation. These were checks that I’d received from members by mail, which I’d sorted, endorsed, and processed for deposit. As I stood at the counter in the bank, waiting for the deposit receipts, I admit that pondered somehow disappearing those funds to another account.

Arriving at the office before anyone else, I let myself in with the key that had been given to me without hestitation. I had been there just a week, but had known the boss just a few days. I made myself some coffee, turned on my computer, and set down to a leisurely breakfast and internet surf. The work I have to do today will take me a couple of hours, but no one here knows it doesn’t take all day, nor what else I may or may not have to do.

Behind me is the supply room, unlocked and uninventoried to the point that an extra printer was discovered back there shortly after I started this assignment. Who had ordered it and when was little more than an amusing mystery to the director. I thought about the expensive, toner-filled order I placed last week – all legitimate – and wondered; what if I’d thrown a few personal items on that list?

There is another seminar coming up, and soon registrations will come flooding in by mail, fax and phone. Credit card numbers will be unquestioningly given to me, authorizations for hundred-plus dollar charges. The credit card machine will hum, the transactions will be processed, all by a person virtually unknown by this company, let alone the attendees so eagerly registering.

I think back to other assignments that I’ve held, other companies equally trusting. At one place I authorized my own as well as ten other temps hours for the week. At another I entered accounts payable information into a database for payment by the parent company. My favorite of all time was when I was given carte-blanche to order virtually any and every thing my boss required; from Christmas gifts to items on eBay. When her credit card was lost (by her, not me) I was given her social and mother’s maiden name so that I could pose as her while communicating with the credit card company about the lost card.

It’s amazing to me. These people are incredibly lucky that the person they had selected for them by an uncaring and soul-less temp company just happens to possess some semblance of morality and a strong belief in karma. Also, I lack the knowledge and abilities required to benefit from such things without being caught.

So yes, I might take advantage of the “victimless” perks; I’ll do all of my work but I’ll take some internet breaks here and there. I’ll order myself the slightly more expensive pens (I hate bic pens) and some might follow me home. I might use the postage meter to mail my personal bills. But I figure these are small things compared with what a lesser (or smarter) person could do in my position….

Hey, are you looking for a job? I might be able to point you in the direction of one. I think this entry would make a good cover letter!!

  2. sarah Says:

I was thinking this would make a good resignation letter for the place I’m currently temping at. Sort of a “here’s where you went wrong” type thing.

This gig ends mid-april, and I have a “real” job lined up for May, with a possible thing to keep me busy in between, so I think I’m okay for now. I’m always interested in a new lead though. Come October I’ll need something again, but hopefully that’ll be part time, because hopefully I’ll be back in school. Oh the life of the chronically under-employed student…

  3. rebaki Says:

What i was thinking was my old place of business lesley university. part of it was becuase my old boss heahter rocks the house and your rock the house so the two of you rocking the house together would just rock!! (she was at my wedding) Also, because once there for about 3 months you would get free tuition and that rocks!!

I emailed her so i’ll forward it to you incase it tickles your job wanting bone.

  4. sarah Says:

Well that definitely wouldn’t suck! Thanks Rebecca, your rockin’ is so much more rockin’er than anyone else who has ever rocked!!

  5. rebaki Says:

    ROCK!

  6. rebaki Says:

i sent you two jobs from Lesley. My old boss doesn’t have anything but said she’s talk to you about any of the other jobs if you are interested. If not, not big deal. I think i a regretting my time at Lesley because I did not take advantage of the free schooling. could of had my masters for free. That would have rocked.

  7. sarah Says:

You’re way too cool for words, I’ll check this out. Again, I’m not sure I’ll need anything until October, and I’m not sure but I might be UMASSing it, but if any of these giant question marks don’t work out I will be seriously greatful for this.

    rockity rock!

  8. rebaki Says:

when do you find out about Umass?

  9. sarah Says:

Well, so far I’ve been “provincially accepted” – pending double and triple checking with my community college about my transcript, GPA and graduation. They’re verifying that I qualify to do the transfer compact / tution reduction plan offered to community college graduates with a good GPA. They’ll let me know in the next couple of weeks, but it’s all very convoluted.

    It’s never easy, you know?

  10. rebaki Says:

    hope it all works out!!

  11. sarah Says:

Today’s deposit – $22,789. Is it really smart to send the lowest paid employee out with that much $$ in checks? Seriously???
