We got a kitty!
Last Wednesday we visited the Animal Rescue League in Dedham, and fell in love with this silky black cat. He wasn’t a cute little kitten like we’d hoped for, but he was super-friendly and loved to be held. His cage tag said that he had been given up by his previous owner because of allergies. We asked one of the shelter staff about him, and she laughingly described him as “trouble” and noted that he was already on hold for someone else. Somehow I missed the “hold” sign on his cage. Saddened and discouraged, we looked at the other cats, but didn’t meet anyone quite as nice as the first one. The girl at the shelter told us to check back in 24 hours, because a lot of times the adoptions fall through. We agreed to do that, and went home.
Thursday night I called to see if he was still there. I explained to the woman who answered the phone that we’d accidentally fallen for this cat without realizing he was taken, and we were wondering if he had been picked up. She laughed and said that he was in fact still there, and was available again. The other adopter had fallen through. Excited, I told her we wouldn’t be able to make it by until Saturday, and she said she was sure he’d still be there.
Saturday took forever to come, and like a kid on Christmas I couldn’t wait to get back over to the shelter. As soon as we walked in, the girl behind the counter recognized us as the people who fell for the “taken” cat. She excitedly told us he was still there, and we went back to the cat room to see him. We took him out of the cage again, played with him a bit, held and poked at him, and announced that we’d take him.
There was a pretty short application, asking basic things about how we’d care for the cat and what sort of people we were. The shelter-girl looked it over, and announced that she liked our answers and if we came back up to the desk she’d fill out the paperwork. Wow, super easy!
Back at the desk she explained that she just had to call our landlord to confirm the cat was allowed. We gave her the number, but she got his voice mail. I mentioned that we knew it wouldn’t be a problem, because it was written into our lease, which we thought to bring a copy of and had out in the car. They were really amused that we had “1 neutered cat” written in bold on our lease, but loved that it stated it so clearly.
A few signatures and a reasonable adoption fee later, and she handed us a cardboard carrier containing our cat! They even gave us food to last us a couple weeks!
After we got him home we set him up in our room so we could cat-prepare the rest of the house. We went to petco and got the necessary supplies, came home and set up things like the litter box, food, etc. The xmas tree came down, as a precaution, and we put away anything else that could be trouble. By early Saturday night we were ready, and let him out into the rest of the house.
He loves tearing down the long hallway, running up the stairs at light speed, listening to the weird noise the fridge makes, trying to get up on the counters, successfully getting into the bathroom sink, and generally causing adorable mayhem. I think we’re all still adjusting to each other a bit, but he seems to be settling in nicely and we’re loving his crazy antics.

So one of the reasons we liked him so much at the shelter was that he would let us pick him up and hold him, didn’t seem freaked out by us or nervous at all. He just seemed very relaxed and yet curious and playful. And even when we brought him home he seemed to be pretty comfortable in his new surroundings. It took him a couple of days to really explore and settle in, but he wasn’t hiding or seeming scared.
Then the biting started. It’s not done in an angry way, but more of a kitten playing rough kind of way. And he still is a kitten, he’s only nine months old. But he’s also full grown and strong. I’m both amazed by and a little scared by his jumping ability. We are starting to train him out of some of these habits, and he’s learning that if he jumps onto my leg while I’m trying to feed him, he’ll have to wait longer for the food. At least I think he’s learning…
But he really is a great cat. He can be very friendly and affectionate, and loves sleeping with us at night. And it’s great watching him play with his toys, especially chasing the laser pointer.
We are happy cat owners!

He is really cute!! I love the crazy cat antics. One of my old cats used to sleep in the sink. Very cute!! Congrats!!
