Email hatemail

December 12th, 2007 at 3:55 pm by sarah

So, I’ve had my gmail account for years, but have just recently been getting all kinds of weird emails not meant for me. They’re sent to my address, but they’re not for me. I usually send a quick note letting the person know, and they usually send back apologizing. For example, I write:

You have the wrong email address, as I have no involvement with whatever your email is addressing. Please check this. I have been receiving a great deal of wrong email and would appreciate everyone removing me from their address books.
Thank you.

They usually write:

I’m so sorry! everyone on my team except sarah has a gmail address, and I just typed in the wrong email for her – very sorry.

Not this last time…

I receive this drippy religious sentimental chain mail, and as this keeps happening, send the following:

You have the wrong email address for whomever you are trying to reach, as I have no idea who you are. Please check this. I have been receiving a great deal of wrong email and would appreciate everyone removing me from their address books. Again, please remove “abc@gmail.com” or “a.b.c.@gmail.com” or however you have it entered in your address book. It is incorrect, and you are reaching someone who does not appreciate these kinds of emails.
Thank you.

Maybe a bit terse, but gets the point across. Here is what I received back. This isn’t even from the original sender, but one of the recipients.

Sarah –

I will make double sure you are removed from my address book on ALL of my email accounts. And I will follow up with my sister as well. She is one of the most considerate, courteous and warm-hearted people I know – so I am sure she will oblige.

Surely, as someone with multiple email addresses, you are aware that in this age of e-communications that messages are often misdirected. If you were unaware – then my note has accomplished something as now you know. It is an incredible shame that you have let this innocent, good intentioned (I’m not sure if you have bothered to look at the message) message affect you so deeply that you could not merely delete the email – as most email users do – but you felt you must send a hateful message to absolute strangers.

My sincere apologies to you for getting email you don’t want to read…I assure you, you are not alone. In the future you may want to direct your churlish correspondence at the hundreds of thousands of spam and junk-mail merchants, as that may prove more productive and rewarding for you.

Warm Regards and Happy Holidays,

Lisa C

WTF? Hateful? Maybe rude, but hateful?? So, of course I don’t just let it go:

Lisa,

Nowhere in my email did I question the motive behind email, or the character of the person who sent it. I am at a loss as to how you read it as hateful. I said that I was not the intended recipient, asked that my address be removed, and added that I didn’t like to receive these types of emails. That’s all. It may be blunt and to the point, but it definitely isn’t hateful.

Certainly I could have just deleted the email, but this is different than spam sent by some anonymous, automated system. This was an email that obviously was sent by a person to a person. I chose to notify these people that they had the wrong email address, something that I did not have to do. Of course I could have just deleted this, but what good would that have done? Your sister or friend would continue to assume she was reaching the person she thought she was sending it to. I decided to let her know.

I apologize if you feel that the way that I chose to notify you all of the incorrect address was rude. I have sent similar messages to several others who also had the incorrect email address and I usually get either no response, or a brief note apologizing for having bothered me. I have never received an email like yours.

Again, I am sorry if you read my email as mean and hateful. It really wasn’t. I wish you luck with dealing with whatever issues cause you to retaliate against imagined insults. I suggest perhaps you grow a thicker skin.

I know, I know. Of course she writes back.

I accept and appreciate your apology.

As you can imagine, I have an incredibly thick skin regarding anything that may chastise me – however, I cannot and will not allow someone I love very much, whose intentions are good, to be scolded, especially in front of those she cares about, for no good reason.

I suggest you think before you talk, or send, and evaluate your tone. I have learned this the hard way, as I have not always been appropriate in my communications. Any issue you may think you have detected in an email is duly noted – regardless, I choose to not allow others to speak to my loved ones in such a tone.

Grow up, we all get email from those we do not know – if you think your situation is special, I apologize. It’s not.

I too could have chosen to ignore your silly email – but I felt maybe you would think before “replying to all” next time.

My bad.

Lisa

And moments later:

And by the way – your tone in the email you initially sent was inappropriate and rude. If you feel you can evaluate my issues through email then you also know its never what you say, but how you say it.

Don’t worry, we won’t send you well wishing emails again.

I’m going to resist writing back again, mostly because this is too weird, but I’m really tempted to point out the hypocricy … and this from x-ians

I think it would be great to give your friends her sister’s email address and we can forward her all kinds of weird shit. Crazy Christian websites and such. Lets see if she asks to be removed.

Is your email address listed in a bathroom somewhere “for a good time forward her email”

I’ve gotten mail for someone from Australia, England, a university in the US and now these crazy people.
The really weird thing is that my email address is firstnamelastname@gmail.com – do all of these people have my name?!

aw man, thank god I only have to deal with email crazies. I don’t think I could deal with crazy in person like that.

although, there is something oddly familiar about the I’m-being-super-nice-fakiness…now where have I seen that before….?
